Before you do anything else, you’ll need to measure your property. Then make notes on your drawing to indicate where it’s sunny/shady, where water may pool and where you need some privacy from neighbors or noise. After that you’ll put in your paths, then place features, focal points and anything on your must-have list. Finally, you’ll need to fill in the negative space of your plan and make sure that there is a flow and that someone can get to all of the different areas and rooms you’ve made. A landscape design is like a floor plan for an outdoor area. Like a floor plan, a landscape design creates a visual representation of a site using scaled dimensions.

In this article, I’ll take you through the steps to design a garden layout that will be functional, practical and beautiful. Learn how to plan AND plant for your peace and privacy with a landscape that compliments your style and beautifies your neighborhood. The kinds of inspiration I looked to included desert specialised plants like succulents and Mediterranean trees like olives – even lovelier as feature trees. I split the site analysis across two plans for Design 3. I solved this in the next steps by reducing it’s opacity – making it lighter. Many people struggle turning their garden and landscaping ideas into a landscape design.

How to Draw Landscape Plans: Help for Beginning DIYers

Texture is primarily a visual matter in landscape design. For example, a plant's texture is often determined by its leaf size. The plant texture of one bedding plant might be considered more or less coarse than that of an adjacent plant due to differences in leaf size. This gorgeous property in Castro Valley, CA with a view already had a pool, but it needed to be repaired ($25,000). The design focuses on keeping the views open and using modern finishes to match the home.

The neighbouring oversight is blocked by the bamboo forest. And the retaining wall forming part of the ramp minimises the impact of the ground slope in that area. This may look like a weird set of examples to use for a garden designed around wheelchair users, but you’ll see how it informed my design/s below. The analysis of Design 3 shows a few spots of sunshine, where wind comes from and where water will flow.

This means you’ll have stronger plants, better nutrient uptake, and ultimately, more vibrant blooms! What’s more, the elevated height of raised beds eliminates the need for excessive bending and kneeling while gardening. This is a game-changer, especially for those with back problems or limited mobility, making tending to your garden a more enjoyable and accessible activity. With Cedreo, you don’t have to know how to draw landscape plans in 3D. You simply design your landscape layouts in 2D and Cedreo will generate a 3D view for you. It is recommended that you design your landscape so plants are grouped together based on their water, soil and sun requirements. Preferably, each zone will have plants with similar water requirements. Create a uniform look in your garden by lining your borders with a row of neatly pruned dwarf shrubs, such as Conifers or English Yew. The contrast between the dark, earthy tones of the bark and the vibrant greenery of the shrubs can create a visually striking border. Bark helps to retain moisture and suppress weed growth, but also adds a textural element that complements the orderly and polished look of the shrubs.

Eye movement is unconsciously influenced by the way plant groupings fit or flow together, both on the horizontal and vertical planes. For example, a straight row of trees can be used as a wall to indicate boundaries and direct a viewer's gaze. Discover why SmartDraw is the best landscape design software today. LOSH will provide sample checklists as well as referrals to helpful websites, persons, and organizations that can assist you with assessing your job site and work tasks for ergonomic hazards. In some circumstances as a fee-for-services, we can study your worksite by doing walk through assessments and/or training in basic office ergonomics. Understanding office ergonomics and arranging your workspace accordingly can help you feel good throughout the workday.

"In 2024, no one should buy a computer chair that only allows them to do one thing."

If you wear bifocals, lower the monitor an additional 1 to 2 inches (about 2 to 5 centimeters) for more comfortable viewing. Adjust the height of the chair so that your feet rest flat on the floor. If the chair has armrests, position them so your arms sit gently on the armrests with your elbows close to your body and your shoulders relaxed. Keeping the right ergonomics of your bed is important to enjoy comfort while working from home.

Environmental physics of ergonomics

“For better ergonomic health, your body should be moving frequently, even when seated. Variability of posture is more important than maintaining 'perfect posture'. Each design is then refined through extensive user testing, including pressure mapping, to ensure it holds up in the real world. Our designers and engineers spend years testing and iterating to ensure that every chair represents the ultimate in technical refinement and ergonomic performance. Our Ergonomics Advisory Board of independent experts works with our engineers on detailed ergonomic studies and product development reviews.

Standing Posture - A How-To Guide

The gentle sloping edges guide you toward the middle for more uniform pressure distribution while still leaving plenty of room for natural movement. Every angle and contour on the Secretlab TITAN Evo has been adjusted for the best fit. To arrive at the precise geometry of the backrest and seat base, we employed an iterative algorithmic design process to generate the perfect shape in three sizes. The ultimate sit-to-stand desk to bring movement back into your space. Recent research by the University of California, Berkeley suggests no significant differences between the two in key areas such as comfort, discomfort, pain, and fatigue.

ergonomics design

Ultimately, ergonomics is about creating spaces that use specific systems, products and designs to enhance how we use them. A Secretlab chair is built to support movement, adapting to you through the full range of postures. If your chair does not allow for movement, stress quickly builds up in your body, leading to pain and discomfort. The Secretlab TITAN Evo is certified by United States Ergonomics to provide measurable ergonomic benefits to the user by improving comfort and fit and minimizing risk factors that may cause injuries.

What is ergonomic design and Why Should You Know About It?

This principle aims to reduce the amount of motion spent while dealing with the design. The motion refers to any movement applied using the figures, wrist, or other parts of the body. One of the examples of applying this principle is the usage of screwdrivers. The electric screwdriver is designed to reduce hand motion during usage.

Products

Exemplified how we approached Orthodontics, and the quality of care that we try to achieve. They were extremely flexible in allowing me to choose the level of service I wanted…and nothing they designed for me was “cookie cutter”. They listened to each one of my suggestions and made it possible to build the office exactly the way I wanted.

The ISO 6385 guidelines provide a manifesto for the principles of ergonomics that need to be considered in the design process. While the 10 principles of ergonomics below are mainly for physical products, they may hold thoughts to consider in the user experience in digital products as well. The vast majority of our users can attest to the long-term comfort and support Secretlab chairs provide. However, they often can’t explain exactly why they like our chairs, and traditional ergonomic myths remain as prevalent as ever. Hence, we’ve decided to detail our approach to ergonomics, including empirical research studies, here.

A well-designed chair should be equipped to adjust to users of diverse body types and sitting habits, across a variety of tasks. A dynamic sitting posture alleviates pressure on your body and reduces the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. Human factors engineering is relevant in the design of such things as safe furniture and easy-to-use interfaces to machines and equipment. Proper ergonomic design is necessary to prevent repetitive strain injuries and other musculoskeletal disorders, which can develop over time and can lead to long-term disability.

Contacting vibrating tools may cause hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Therefore, designing products that use motors or vibrate while holding should consider this principle.

The unbalanced posture of the human body is known as an “awkward posture”. The usage of the designed product should avoid putting the consumer in an awkward posture. For example, the product design should ensure that the consumer is not forced to use awkward postures in order to use the product.

Work systems are made up of humans, the tools, processes, and technologies they use, and the work environment. Members of the HFE community recognize the need for participation of all stakeholder in system design groups (i.e., Participatory HFE). Place the computer monitor straight in front of you, directly behind your keyboard, about an arm's length away from your face. The monitor should be no closer to you than 20 inches (about 50 centimeters) and no further away than 40 inches (about 100 centimeters).

The design of the systems is focused on rather than the design of the furniture. In a different way, it helps the employees become comfortable by looking at systems and areas that are not functioning well. Organizational ergonomics is more about teamwork and collaboration and the main goal is to increase job satisfaction and boost productivity. You should consider an ergonomic chair design at the earliest to avoid back muscle strain.

Seats made out of foam significantly decrease the pressure exerted on the body. Furthermore, chairs with lumbar support and adjustable armrests lead to greater comfort and an improved experience overall. Ergonomic design means design focused on people and how they might interact with something. Read on to explore what ergonomic design is and why it is important in all industries.

A few few benefits of ergonomics are that they help relieve back pain, neck pain, knee and calf pain. The user experience is the core of the design process, and we, as designers, apply existing design processes such as the Double Diamond Design Thinking to improve our user’s experience and achieve the so-called empathic design. Interior design ergonomics looks at how people interact with the environment spatially. Ergonomics looks at how people interact with furniture and other items in their homes and how they use them. This factors in things like cabinet height, furniture size, room layout and lighting to ensure that they are designed for maximum comfort and promote well-being. We perform best when our work involves transitioning between varied healthy postures.

He was regularly invited to open Cincinnati Reds games at the Great American Ball Park with his rendition of the national anthem, and made the rounds doing interviews for local radio stations and NPR. After High School, Forsthoefel and Voegele moved to Athens, OH to attend Ohio University, where they started playing with local Athens players at venues such as Jackie O’s and The Union. Eventually they joined with members of the band Standing on Friday, and rehearsals began at their house on Grosvenor Street. These rehearsals at “The Grove” started becoming informal shows; it wasn’t long before the band that was born there became a mainstay of the Athens music scene, releasing their debut CD “Procuriosity” in December of 2012. In addition to playing in Athens, The Grove made frequent trips back to Cincinnati, playing local music festivals and at the famed Fountain Square.

And I think the scene itself is better, stronger, and bound to live longer because of that. The Pfaltzgraff YearsLike Metlox, Treasure Craft found salvation in cookie jars in the late'70s and '80s. It was super fun tag-teaming this one with a fellow CincyMusic contributor. When The Southgate House Revival opened in Newport on October 12, 2012, it was not just the soul of one of Cincinnati’s greatest musical institutions that found new life. The red brick building, which celebrates its sesquicentennial this year, dates to 1866, and was home to Grace Methodist Episcopal Church for 120 years. It survived a direct hit by a tornado on July 7, 1915 and a catastrophic windstorm March 10, 1986.

Ruth Asberry’s cousin Jennie Evans Moore, who lived across the street, was resting on a stool, when she suddenly fell to the ground and began to speak in tongues. She is known as one of the first women in Los Angeles to speak in tongues during this time. He was raised in mining country, so it’s no surprise that he would earn a degree in agriculture from Western Kentucky University and then work as a mine reclamation inspector and then miner’s consultant. But eventually his passion for writing songs and playing guitar, both inspired by his musical hero, the late John Prine, led him to chronicle his surroundings in words and music.

Sundae Drives is an Acoustic driven Soul / Pop / Hip Hop / R&B act from the east side of Cincinnati, Ohio featuring singer - songwriter Adam Lee. Known for his unique sound and intense yet intimate live performances, SD plays a raw, stripped down & creative style of music. Through unorthodox guitar playing and melodic vocals infused with organic percussion, emotional keys and slick bass lines, Sundae Drives is sure to find a place in your heart. God crashed into that meeting like never before and someone started to speak in tongues. Several others got baptized in the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues as well.

That being said, keep in mind that tickets will be limited to 50 people for each show. Times are still crazy, but luckily, SGHR has precautions set in place to ensure the safety of staff, artists, and guests. Knight will hit the sonic highlights of his career in concert June 27 at 8pm (doors @ 7pm) at Southgate House Revival, 111 East Sixth Street in Newport, KY. It was either the fall or spring of 2006 when I first walked into The Crow’s Nest.

I didn’t know anyone was kicking around that played with those sounds anymore, so it ended up being a bit of a refreshing set, if not a little nostalgic at the same time. Taking the stage first, “Emo Dads” and all around good dudes Abandoned Malls of America brought their unique amalgamation of emo/punk/rock to the masses, with members of the crowd stopping by their table to offer praise and thanks for their set. It’s fun, both for me as a fan and as someone who tries to keep an eye on things happening within the scene (to then later write about, of course), to see how bands are both received and perceived. While their sound may not have aligned perfectly with the other bands on the bill, they did make a lot of sense with that particular crowd and, unsurprisingly, left the show last night with a good amount of new fans.

Ten short months after the closing of the old building, the Southgate House Revival opened with the 2012 Cincypunk Fest. The renovated building’s primary performance space is the high-ceilinged Sanctuary, which has a similar capacity to the old House’s Ballroom (600). The church’s pipe organ towers above the bar on the south end of the room, and at the north end, a beautiful arches rise above the stage. It’s a striking, dramatic space for music, commented upon and loved by artists and audience alike. In 2013, The Breeders used the room as a rehearsal space, and then kicked off their Last Splash XX reunion tour with a surprise show. The room has also played host to the likes of Built to Spill, Billy Bragg, Drive-By Truckers, and countless other favorites who frequented the old space.

Every Sunday, people from all walks of life crowd into a West Covington bar to break bread, enjoy some spirits, and come together over a shared love of music. Like church, it’s not the building that makes the congregation a community, but the common ground... Every pocket within our city has a number of places to check out your next favorite band. Within the month of April, CincyMusic.com will be featuring Neighborhood Venues in Cincinnati. These venues include; a past brothel, the home of the amazing open mic night (and a darn good pretzel), an old school jazz joint, a west side gem, the venue that was once underwater, where to go to worship music, and the go-to spot in OTR for breaking bands. Raleigh was left looking for a new location, and settled on the church only four blocks away.

Arcade Fire, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, The Killers, and The White Stripes all performed at Southgate on their early tours, and a given weeks’ schedule might include bluegrass, black metal, and indie rock spread across the venue’s four performance spaces. Perhaps most importantly, Southgate House provided an enthusiastic, welcoming incubator for the local music scene, and young area acts were often tacked onto national bills. Friday Giants took the second slot, and being a name I’d seen but not a band I heard, I was impressed by what they were offering. There were definitely fans of the band in the crowd, which is always great to see, and their set was well balanced with heavy and light, often within the span of a single song, and it was well paced with punk rock rippers and ballad-esque tracks. I got big Underoath vibes, maybe some of the older stuff from The Used, though I’m sure there are more appropriate analogous acts to compare them to. Regardless, they do what they do well - and it was honestly surprising to hear a band working within those particular genre confines in NKY.

On Night Owls, the Dollyrots once again highlight their ability to craft music that resonates deeply, whether it’s through high-energy punk tracks, rowdy rockers, or introspective ballads. Each track brings its own flair, with subtle tweaks and shifts that keep the listening experience fresh from start to finish. Down to hell and back again is one way to put the feeling behind a lot of the songs currently coming from Dead Man String Band fronted by Northern Kentucky's Rob McAllister. Also, shouts to James Quigly for capturing the night on camera - be sure to check out his photos of all the bands.

I knew they had a fairly significant fanbase, but was unfamiliar with their sound, which sounded to me like melodic post-hardcore mixed with old nu-metal. The vocals were dynamic and genuinely great, recalling bands like Glassjaw and letlive., and the guitar work from their single guitarist was a joy to watch and listen to. Lots of interesting, intricate stuff was happening on stage, with melodies and guitar lines and vocals, so their set was never boring. One’s mileage certainly varies with screamo or screamo adjacent bands, but for me, personally, I was definitely into what Softspoken are up to and look forward to seeing them again soon. Over the course of those decades, the 19th century mansion became a landmark on the national music scene, playing host to Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and rising stars alike.

An ink stamp Southgate mark was employed on new molds by 1956, witha line of modernistic ashtrays shaped like fish and other creatures. Butthese lines would only bear Treasure Craft's bright glazes for a year;the firm had outgrown Southgate. Alfred Levin bought a house in the new LA suburbs when he returned homefrom WWII. Many 1940s LA families started backyard potteries, as thepottery marked boomed with Axis factories in ruins. What is remarkableis that Treasure Craft Pottery survived a half century, long after newGerman and Japanese factories laid waste to most California ceramicists. We’re located just outside of downtown Cincinnati in historic Newport, Kentucky, with ample parking and restaurants nearby.

She enjoys live music with strangers, singing in the car, and supporting local music. Cincinnati and NKY continue to surprise me, and I just absolutely love it. Last night, The Southgate House Revival played host to a set of bands that might be considered somewhat atypical compared to their usual offerings, but the venue proved to be a great setting for a show with unsurprisingly strong local support. Like his beloved Prine, whom Knight duets with on Prine’s chestnut “Mexican Home,” the cut that closes Almost Daylight, Knight fits comfortably in Texas honky-tonks, downtown Nashville venues, and cool Manhattan rock clubs. All in all, it really was an exceptional night of music for the Cincy/NKY scene. Not my usual thing, sure, but it was a terrific reminder that the Cincy/NKY scene is awesomely diverse and has a much deeper, varied, and ultimately interesting bench of bands making really great music.

Because Knight’s music has always sat outside of the mainstream, onstage is where he makes his fans one show at a time. It is exactly where his searing tales of rural characters, fringe survivors, and tumultuous small-town existence find a captivated audience. A few edgy, raw gems that immediately come to mind are “It Ain’t Easy Being Me,” “Carla Came Home,” “I’m William Callahan,” and “Everybody’s Lonely Now,” the latter two from Almost Daylight. That brutally honest, no-frills philosophy fits his Americana-fueled, backwoods-grown merger of folk, country, and rock. That triangular building right smack dab in the middle of the five way stop as you travel up Vine St on the corner of West McMicken. The opalescent formula has a herbaceous scent and leaves color-treated strands both vibrant and volumized, not dull. When sisters Tonya Thompson and Sharie Wilson opened up their first salon back in 2006 and began exclusively using their own products, they never dreamt it would expand to the public. Fast forward 18 years later, and DreamGirls's 5-Step Healthy Hair Care System is now available internationally.

We compiled a list of 55 Black-owned haircare brands to shop before your next wash day. As a former content creator, she loved educating others on how to care for their natural hair. Her collection caters to all hair textures and types with moisturizing formulas that include castor oil, shea butter and honey.

Hair Rules

CURLS's most popular collection—Blueberry Bliss—has a distinct blueberry scent no one can seem to get enough of and yes, it's worth splurging on. If you’re a fan of coconuts, this shampoo nourishes your strands with creamy coconut oil and milk that leaves a subtle tropical scent that's sure to garner compliments. The Too Easy Collection (consisting of a shampoo, conditioner, leave-in and styling cream) helps detangle, moisturize and defrizz hair. One PureWow editor even tried the brand and she was definitely not disappointed with the results. If you’ve been struggling to detangle or style your hair due to excess damage, allow SheaMoisture’s Intensive Hydration Shampoo to bring your hair back to life. The “hydration” comes courtesy of manuka honey and mafura oil, which makes the hair softer and shinier instead of dry and stiff like many other cleansers.

Hair Rules No Suds Cleansing Cream

In three years, the accessory brand has expanded to include other silk hair tools, like the Silk Pillowcase and Silk Pañuelo (aka silk scarf), catered to curly and coily hair. The brand’s name translates to honey, which means you’ll definitely find the sweet ingredient in all of their products. When founder Jamyla Bennu couldn’t find products to suit her coily hair, she decided to make her own collection and Oyin Handmade was born. As the name suggests, this Aveda shampoo is a savior for chemically-treated hair or any hair in desperate need of a tune-up.

Best for Scalp

Mango butter and coconut oil work together to replenish strands and make curls appear healthier and bouncier. “Sulfate-free shampoo is formulated with cleansers that do not contain sulfates, which are essentially detergents that help to create suds and lather to cleanse the hair and scalp,” Bailey explains. For a long time, there was a lack of BIPOC representation in the beauty space, especially when it came to natural hair. Brands were often shoved into the “ethnic” aisle, or worse, offered a limited number of options for all hair types and textures. If we’re not saving Gabrielle Union’s incredible fashion moments on Instagram, we’re double-tapping photos of her hair journey.

Rucker Roots Smoothing Sulfate Free Shampoo

You’ll find that all the products have natural ingredients (like avocado oil, shea butter and tea tree oil) to hydrate, moisturize and protect all hair types. In 2013, Jessica Dupart started Kaleidoscope to help people with hair loss and scalp conditions. Her signature product—Miracle Drops—was a way to combat those woes and promote healthy hair growth.

And despite the constant hair discrimination and microaggressions, she embarked on a journey of connecting closer to her roots (literally and figuratively). After studying abroad in the Dominican Republic and traveling around the world, she launched Honey Beauty as a way to teach others how to embrace their natural hair and ways to take care of it. Her entire collection uses natural ingredients (like honey and argan oil), while building an inclusive community for all. Fast forward to now, and there are a ton of brands dedicated to curls, coils, protective styles and everything in between. While some of the brands are no longer Black-owned, there are still so many companies that are—from Briogeo to Melanin Haircare.

Every product stems from homemade recipes passed down from generations of Bahamian women before her. You'll find ingredients like coconut, hibiscus and banana throughout the collections for natural, curly and relaxed hair. Founder Ayo Ogun created Soultanicals to find a better detangler for her daughter's hair. The vegan brand uses organic, plant-based and African botanical ingredients in every product to keep hair tangle-free, soft and moisturized, especially for dry, coarse and coily hair.

Alodia Hair Care

The brand also offers accessories and bundles to complete your full wash and styling experience. This growth serum puts frizz and tangles to rest thanks to its essential oils blend (like black castor oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil and argan oil). From a hot oil treatment to styling, the product can be used pretty much at any step in your routine. Bread Beauty Supply is bringing you back to the basics with core products to help you not overdo wash day. The Australian brand caters to people with 3A to 4C curls with steps like cleansing, masking, oiling.

In 2021, she brought her brand to Shark Tank, where she struck a deal, so we haven't seen the last of KE. Founded by beauty veteran Keenan Beasley, Sunday II Sunday is making it easier to stay active without worrying about your natural hair sweating out (in under 15 minutes, FYI). All products feature botanical ingredients to remove sweat, balance moisture and reduce itchiness, so go schedule that spin class. Celebrity hairstylist Dickey knows a thing or two about natural hair (he counts celebs like Sarah Jessica Parker, Rihanna and former First Lady Michelle Obama as part of his clientele). What started out as a guidebook about how to take care of your hair turned into a product line for all textures to use at home or at his NYC salon dedicated to curly hair.

The formula is built with strengthening ingredients like biotin and keratin, while chia seed oil swoops in to soothe and nourish the strands. Those that are formulated without sulfate may not offer as many suds, but they’ll also leave hair perfectly clean and much less damaged over time, especially if your hair is color-treated or curly. Celebs like Alicia Keys, Lupita Nyong'o, and Viola Davis are just a few A-list customers who have raved about the brand. Transform your bathroom into a tranquil spa with a heavenly aroma of peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary. Formulated with these same ingredients, this shampoo promotes scalp circulation while also conditioning and nourishing the hair to rebuild it stronger.

Mielle Organics took the natural hair community by storm when it launched just nine years ago. Founder and former nurse Monique Rodriguez used her expertise in health and science to develop a wide range of curly- and coily-focused products. The mixture of herbs, amino acids and minerals can be found in every collection to improve the health of your locks. I’ll admit that I’m still not totally clear as to why I must stay away from specific ingredients, particularly the hotly contested “sulfates” in shampoos. So I turned to Alicia Bailey, hair texture specialist and global education manager at Design Essentials, for answers.

After years of research, she worked with a women-led team to create an alternative to plastic synthetic hair. Made from repurposed biopolymers, each bundle is free from toxins, it's vegan-friendly and overall a great option for those with sensitive scalps. A coconut-based cleanser means you’ll still get a frothy and satisfying lather, but without any unfortunate stripping.

The brand’s minimalist packaging alone is enough reason to consider adding it to your routine, but don’t worry, the results justify the choice. The combo of baobab, peppermint, spearmint and wintergreen oil works to promote hair growth, treat scalp conditions (aka dandruff and flakes) and provide moisture. When founder Muhga Eltigani decided to chop her hair off and start over, she opted to use only natural ingredients in her routine. Soon after, she joined an online community, where she swapped recipes and helpful ingredients with other members. Once she experienced the benefits of these natural formulas on her hair, she decided to launch NaturAll in 2015. In the nine years since, the brand has been offering clean haircare products with ingredients sourced directly from small farmers in Jamaica and Ghana.

After suffering from a chemical hair burn, founder Jasmine Lawrence vowed to create natural products that nurture and restore hair for all curl types. You’ll find seven different collections to target different hair issues like breakage, dryness or itchiness for as low as $5. With a focus on biotin and coconut oil, you can relax knowing that your hair is receiving the right care. While biotin steps in to increase your hair’s resistance, coconut oil works to nourish and smooth limp strands. A favorite among beauty obsessives everywhere, Olaplex’s shampoo repairs, strengthens, and restores hair bonds without stripping it of its natural oils and nutrients. Whether you have curly hair or prefer blowouts, The Doux has a product for every hair type.

This is a replica of a real house located in Eugene, Oregon. Foam board, an X- Acto knife, a metal ruler, and drafting triangles were used to make the pattern. In this clock tower scene, a Chick-o-Stick candle is supporting the height. The balls on the top of the clock are giant gumballs.

Fondant, gum paste, and marzipan were used to create the toys and characters. This project took 5 days to complete and is made entirely of gingerbread and candy. This Christmas-themed cottage is made from gingerbread, icing, candy rocks, and ice cream cone pine trees. Making a gingerbread house is no simple task (unless, of course, you get one of those pre-fab houses, in which case these notes will be of little help). Cut around the pieces one more time to make sure they are nice and straight.

Homemade Subway Bread Recipe

Some shrubs are corn flakes and others are Fruity Pebbles. This gingerbread house stands four feet tall and is made with 40 pounds of gingerbread and 30 pounds of royal icing. This was made using a classic Victorian gingerbread blueprint. Jelly candy rocks make up the chimney, and chocolate fondant with corn starch snow make up the roof.

Do not pack or tamp down the flour in the cup. Let me know what you thought with a comment and rating below. You can also take a picture and tag me on Instagram @houseofnasheats or share it on the Pinterest pin so I can see. Graham crackers are the ultimate shortcut to making a cute house design.

How to Make a Dusting of Snow

The snow man received a glove and a scarf before the boys were distracted and and on to the next activity. My stone is toffee cooked to be softer than normal so it’s pliable enough to form into realistic-looking stones, then hand painted using food color. Black licorice string was cut repeatedly to make it thin enough to look like leather rope for the chocolate tree’s swing. Except for the key, this clock is made entirely of gingerbread. The grape leaves were all formed and veined by hand.

You can find exact measurements below in the recipe card. The sailboat and dock was also made from gum paste. The bricks were cut from slabs of gingerbread using a pizza wheel and a paring knife. They were baked in batches at different temperatures to achieve color variation.

Attempting the gingerbread, icing, and construction all on the same day can be challenging. Then once the houses are all done, move them to another location and clean up all the sprinkles and icing and mess in one go. Use your cookie cutters to make different shapes that you can also stick on or in front of your gingerbread house. My advice is to find a cooler part of your home and allow the icing to harden there. To speed things up, use a hair dryer on its cool setting and on high speed and use the cool air to dry out the royal icing.

The landscaping was done mainly in crushed and powdered gingerbread and fondant. For this project, the gingerbread pieces were cut to size before baking. The house is lit from within with a string of 50 lights and is topped with shingles made of cinnamon cereal.

The record for the largest gingerbread house, however, was set in 2013 in Bryan, Texas, where it seems like I’ve heard everything is bigger. This house, which came in at 39,202 cubic feet, broke the previous record held by the Mall of America in Minnesota. In 1812 Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published one of their most famous stories.

Use your hands or a sturdy object like a can or box to support the walls while they set. With royal icing, this should only take a few minutes. The icing is set when the pieces hold steady without sliding apart. You should now have all four walls assembled.

Some of my favorite places for sourcing fun candy for decorating gingerbread houses are stores like Home Goods, Target, and craft stores. Sometimes, I will just save leftover candy that doesn't get used for the next year, since it's not something we plan to eat anyway. I have enjoyed making gingerbread houses almost every year since!
