House tour: Architectural homes in Los Angeles

10 mile house

You can read about my visit here in my post on Greystone Mansion. There’s loads of architectural history in Harvard Heights. The small, dense neighborhood lies within a historic overlay zone, and it also houses what’s thought to be the last L.A. Home designed by the iconic Craftsman duo Greene and Greene. For food, stop by Mexican joint Guelaguetza, which landed on the 2020 L.A. The Sowden House, like The Derby House, was designed by Lloyd Wright in 1926.

Of all the homes on this list, this is the only one so far that will give you beautiful views of the ocean. It has been called the Taj Mahal of Tile and I absolutely love that the house features locally made tile! The house was built in 1929 as a vacation home for the Adamson family but eventually became their fulltime residence.

The deadly collision prompted an hours-long Sigalert for lane closures that was finally lifted around 4 a.m. The gate fee is reimbursed with a purchase of $35 or more at all Pebble Beach Resorts restaurants, excluding Pebble Beach Market. Admission is complimentary for overnight guests of The Lodge at Pebble Beach, The Inn at Spanish Bay and Casa Palmero.

A MacArthur Genius Grant recipient, Maloof has had his iconic rocking chairs shown at the Smithsonian; he also designed the chairs that were used on-camera at the history-changing Nixon/Kennedy debates. Visitors can see some of this furniture, as well as the wide-ranging collection of arts-and-craft pieces that he and his wife of 50 years, Alfreda, amassed together. The garden, which he tended, and the house are both open for tours; if you ask, you might be able to peek into the workshop, where he continued building until his death in 2009 at the age of 93. Built in 1911, this was the first mansion in Beverly Hills. The house looks beautiful but from the reviews that I have read, the gardens are truly what people love.

Each Saturday, students in Cal Poly Pomona’s architecture program lead half-hour tours. This 1921, Mayan-inflected Frank Lloyd Wright house was originally built as a “progressive theatrical community” space by activist and oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. Today it’s the centerpiece of Barnsdall Park and is open for tours during the park’s popular Friday night wine tasting events.

Doheny’s father was mired in the Teacup Dome Scandal at the time, and the deaths meant that he was excused from testifying; rumors also abounded that Ned, who was married with children, was trying to cover up a same-sex affair. When the home was finished in 1929, it cost a reported $3M, making it the most expensive private home in the city at the time. Master woodworker Sam Maloof and his carpenters designed and built this lovely, thoughtful home piece by piece in his on-site workshop; no two door openings are the same here, and each joint is a wonder of craftsmanship.

Please note that not all of the homes on this list are open to the public but I will make sure to specify which ones are available for you to visit vs which ones you can drive by. The Eames House, also known as case study #8, is mid-20th century modern architecture. The house was designed by the couple Ray and Charles Eames to serve as their home and studio. Free street parking is available on Corona Del Mar which is a five-minute walk from the house.

You can also request a driver to transport you throughout the Resorts, our golf courses and the Monterey Peninsula Airport in a luxurious Lexus Guest Transportation vehicle. Located at the heart of 17-Mile Drive across from The Lodge, the Pebble Beach Visitor Center shares the storied century-long history of Pebble Beach Resorts, and also offers guests a retail shopping experience and refreshments. Follow 17-Mile Drive’s red-dotted line to arrive at an enchanting world full of dramatic coastal cliffs, snow-white beaches, mystical forests and iconic golf courses. I visited the Hollyhock House in February of 2020 right before things got crazy with COVID-19. Thanks to a lecture series that was happening I was able to get visit this amazing home for free.

This was one of the first homes I ever toured in LA and fell in love with learning about the history of the unique homes in the area. You can read more about my visits to the Gamble House here. This home and park have such a wonderful variety of activities for visitors. You can tour the home (during non-covid times), go horseback riding, hiking, attend movie nights over the summer, and polo games. Will Rogers was a popular actor in the early days of Hollywood. In the 1920’s he bought land in Santa Monica and his 359 acres included some land that would later become part of Pacific Palisades.

After the death of the owners, the state won a lawsuit to put beach parking where the house is. The parking lot got approved but thanks to the work of locals and volunteers the house still remains. He was the one who decided on their profession, sending them off to MIT and then demanding they move out to Pasadena once they graduated. No word on whether he determined their style as well, but no matter who the progenitor, this graceful house originally built for one of the heirs of the Proctor & Gamble fortune remains one of the best examples of their work. However you decide to experience it, don’t miss the remarkable zig-zag staircase, a joyous element that adds a bit of fun to the perfection of the house.

Docents were placed throughout the home to offer insight but it was nice to get to walk around on our own. The biggest bummer is that you cannot take photography indoors. I was in awe of the living room and so badly wanted a picture. Visit these important architectural homes from some of LA's pioneering greats like Eames, Gehry and Neutra.
